Choosing a non-toxic shower curtain

Few people know that most plastic shower curtains and liners are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This material can release more than 100 toxic chemicals into the air. These curtains are also usually treated with phthalates, which have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and damage to the liver and kidneys.

PVC curtains cannot be recycled either. Once thrown away, they simply add to the plastic waste in our landfills.

An eco-friendly curtain keeps you away from these chemicals and avoids the pollution caused by making and discarding plastic.

When it is time to replace your shower curtain, choose a toxin-free one. Organic curtains made of cotton, linen or hemp are easy to find. They are strong, machine washable and do not need a liner.

Natural fabric curtains can sometimes develop mold or mildew. If this happens, wash them in the machine with a little tea tree oil and let them dry, in the sun if possible. If mold keeps coming back, a glass shower door is another way to avoid PVC.

If you would rather keep a plastic curtain, look for a PVC-free model.
